Summary:
Directs and supervises nursing staff in providing health care to residents. Plans, directs, supervises, and coordinates activities for the efficient and effective management of the nursing units and staff.
 
Minimum Qualifications:
 
1.   Current registration in Ontario with the College of Nurses.  
2.   Experience in geriatric nursing and knowledge of long term care an asset.  
3.   Basic computer skills.
Principal Responsibilities:


1.   Accountable for own actions to the College of Nurses. 
2.   Carries drug room and master keys to the Lodge allowing access as needed.  
3.   Observes, assesses, documents, and evaluates all situations concerning each resident to meet their physical, social, spiritual and psychological needs.  
4.   Assists with processing physician orders, drug orders, diagnostic tests, and arranging of appointments.  Completes rounds to each unit with the Medical Director, and assists other physicians with their rounds as required.  Maintains ongoing communication with doctors and families of any changes in resident’s health status.  
5.   Completes medication passes and treatment when needed.  
6.   Completes initial assessment conference and multi-disciplinary team conference, computerized documentation and chairs or participates in these meetings with other disciplines, the resident and the family. 
7.   Assists with ongoing work of other staff, for example, supporting the RPN role, answering call bells, and assisting with care, feeding, and assessment of residents as needed.  Replaces staff after hours and on weekends.  
8.   Responds as required to health and safety, fire and disaster, and staff and resident emergencies.  
9.   Assists in orienting new staff to the building, the residents, and the routine of each area.  
10. Supervises staff on each shift, ensuring safe and effective care is being provided.  Ensures ministry guidelines and the Resident’s Bill of Rights are being met at all times. 
11. Addresses staff, resident care and facility issues as they arise, and reports to the Manager of Resident Services.  
12. Completes nursing audits as assigned. 
13. Provides first aid measures and initiates and assists with CPR.  
14. Performs other duties as assigned.

 

Working Conditions:
  1. Works in a long term care facility environment.
  2. Physical activity including frequent walking, and pushing heavy medication carts.
  3. Exposure to human waste, odour, flu, hepatitis, and other infectious diseases.
