Routine practices

Routine practices are based on the fact that all body fluids and mucous membranes contain microorganisms. The goal is to reduce exposure to body fluids by health care provider and others. Routine practices apply to all residents/patients all the time regardless of diagnosis or presumed infection status.

These practices are intended to reduce the risk of transmission of organisms, under conditions where exposure to the following may occur:
  • Blood
  • All body fluids, secretions, excretions whether or not they contain blood
  • Non intact skin
  • Mucous membranes
