Oxford County Public Health seeking information about dog biting in Tillsonburg

Public Health is seeking information about the dog in order to prevent rabies treatment for the child

Oxford County Public Health is investigating a dog biting incident that took place in Tillsonburg, on Thursday January 11.

A young child was bit by a Jack Russell dog that was being walked on a leash by a couple near the former Rolph Street Elementary School (83 Rolph St., Tillsonburg). The child approached the dog and was bit on the face.

Public Health is seeking information about the dog in order to prevent rabies treatment for the child. If you are the dog owner, or have information about this incident, please contact public health inspector Niels Dubé at 519-539-9800, extension 3421.

Rabies is a fatal disease. If you are dog owner whose pet has bitten someone, report it to Public Health. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water, seek medical attention and call Public Health at 519-539-9800, ext. 3410 or 1-800-755-0394.


Background

Rabies is a virus found in the saliva of infected wild animals such as skunks, foxes, raccoons and bats. It can spread to other wild animals, farm animals, pets and humans through a bite, scratch, cut or contact with the moist tissues of the mouth, nose and eyes. Rabies is a fatal disease.

To keep your pets and family rabies-free:

  • Make sure your pet vaccinations are up to date.
  •  Keep your pets indoors at night.
  • Teach children to stay away from wild animals and strange dogs and cats.
  • Supervise children around pets.
  • Always ask permission from a pet owner before trying to pet an animal.
  • Do not attempt to touch or feed wild animals.
